Part of what Sue needs to be able to write the new rules is to have the new Basic/Demo character completed. I have it in close to prepared. The new Basic character will have 27 total cards in it. This will give the character enough cards to create variety and to be able to grow the character.
Once Sue has the rules well on their way I will need to go back through these cards to make sure they match the rules. I doubt that will require much change, but there will be some.
The basic character will be the Human Dragon. The game is called Dragon Storm, so it makes sense to start with a Dragon. Many of the players in the game will be humans, so we will start with the human. Classic Characters will slide into the new edition perfectly, so older personalized character cards all will work just fine.
We will also be creating a series of other Dragon Characters that can be switched into the starter set by adding a new character race. Over time there will be Tigrean, Das Karr, Dwarf, Farilan Elf, Ebony Elf, Vermite, Vorn, Foxwings and Canine Dragon characters available. Yes, that is a nine card set.
Backgrounds are getting a full make over. One of the things we want to do is to increase the text size on all of the cards. Backgrounds have a lot of text. To get the larger text size we are dropping the art from the background cards.
This card also has the new "Enhance" label in the card type line. Enhance is both new and old. Enhance cards are added to whatever is appropriate. They have a "0" timing and therefore do not count as a "thing" to activate them. The reason I say this is old is because cards like Dragon Claws exhibit the same functions. What we are doing is labeling this category of cards so we can explain it. It will be very easy for GM's and Players to figure out which Classic cards are Enhances and use them. If any questions come up, your GM will use rule 3.4 to decide.
One other note that I should mention is the new card numbering system. Characters are Characters. You get one. Backgrounds are Backgrounds. You get one.
That is it for your morning card update. Enjoy.
Mikey is sorry to see Sue's artwork go but accepts the necessity. Plenty of it in the rest of the game. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Mark,
ReplyDeleteHere is a thought to toss around. With DS 1, we eventually got to a point where there were a lot of non-shifters to begin with and people using Latent Shifter to create characters with different setups (example an Elven Gargoyle or Dwarven Werewolf). Why not change things in DS 2 to setup the system like this....
1. Pick a Race
2. Pick a Shifter type (or none)
3. Pick a Background
4. Pick any anchors or aces to round out the character
Basically separate the Race/Shifter types from the cards and make it all customizable.
Just a thought.
Jason
We will do that in other games. We like how it works.
ReplyDeleteWhen we proposed it for DS a few years ago the people who responded felt it was a greater change than they wanted to see in DS, so we did not include it in the redesign play testing for DS.
Well, I also like that idea and now would be its time. But a latent shifter set could possibly be designed to enable us to "go both ways"...if there is any interest in such...
ReplyDeleteYa know, you could probably do this with existing cards and a rule about latent shifters. Just swap the latent shifter character card with the corresponding shifter character card after the shift. Cp gained or lost is either a bonus or a cost. Keeps it simple. Another thought on Jason's good idea.
ReplyDeleteOddly enough I set up the Latent Shifter sheet yesterday. What we did in the past was that we did a single Latent Shifter card for everyone. This time it will be one for each race. We are considering variable stats on a shifter race by shifter race basis. That involves having the base race for each shifter, then the Latent card for each race and finally the several races non-shifter cards. We then stat out the latents, and finally adjust the races to make everything vaguely equal in the CP area. Even once we have it pointed out it will require nine new pieces of art from Sue to actually print the latent sheet. Finally we will need to write a Guideline to finish the project.
ReplyDeleteI'm new to the game. What is the Farilan Elf race???
